Retail Packaging and Shelf Ready

Retail packaging has to satisfy two customers - the retailer's backroom and the shopper at the shelf - and they want different things from the same box.

The quick answer

Retail packaging is packaging specified for goods sold through retail, where the pack has to work in the retailer's supply chain and on the shelf. WSUK specifies and supplies shelf ready packaging and retail ready cases, retail outer cases, display and presentation formats, point of sale material, carrier bags and in-store consumables for UK brands and suppliers. The constraint that shapes everything is that retailers publish their own packaging requirements - case dimensions, pallet configuration, labelling, ease of opening and shelf presentation - and a pack that ignores them creates problems at the depot. For contract packing of retail promotions, WSUK provides co-packing and repacking.

What We Specify

Two Customers, One Box

The retailer wants it to open in one movement and stack square. The shopper wants to see the product. Both have to be designed in.

Shelf Ready and Retail Ready Cases

Cases designed to go from pallet to shelf as a unit - easy-open perforation, a front face that presents the product, and dimensions that fit the shelf and the pallet.

  • One-movement opening
  • Product-facing front panel
  • Shelf and pallet dimensions

Retail Outer Cases to Specification

Outers built to the retailer's published requirements for case size, count, labelling, pallet configuration and stack strength.

  • Retailer case specifications
  • Pallet configuration
  • Labelling and barcode placement

Display, Presentation and In-Store

Counter and floor display formats, presentation packaging, point of sale material and carrier bags and consumables for the store itself.

  • Counter and floor displays
  • Presentation formats
  • Carrier bags and in-store consumables
Why It Matters

A Non-Compliant Case Costs You at the Depot

Retail packaging failures do not usually show up as damage. They show up as handling charges, rejections and a buyer conversation.

  • Meets the Retailer's Requirements Case dimensions, counts, labelling and pallet configuration specified against what the retailer actually publishes.
  • Faster Shelf Replenishment Shelf ready cases open in one movement and go straight out, which is what the retailer is measuring.
  • Better Shelf Presence A front face that presents the product rather than a plain brown panel facing the shopper.
  • Square, Stable Pallets Cases sized to the pallet footprint stack without part layers, which reduces damage and handling queries.
  • Consistent Across Retailers Where several retailers each have requirements, the specification set is managed rather than improvised per account.
  • Promotions Handled Too Display units, multipacks and promotional formats specified and, if needed, packed - WSUK does the contract packing as well.

What Is Retail Packaging?

Retail packaging is packaging for product sold through a retailer, and the thing that makes it a distinct specification problem is that it has two customers with different requirements. The retailer's supply chain wants a case that arrives square on a pallet configured the way their depot handles, that is labelled where their scanners expect, that opens in a single movement so a colleague can put stock out quickly, and that does not leave packaging waste all over the shop floor. The shopper wants to see the product, understand what it is, and find it attractive enough to pick up. Shelf ready packaging - sometimes called retail ready packaging - is the format that tries to satisfy both: a case with a perforated or scored opening that removes the front and top in one action, leaving a tray that presents the product facing outward, sized so that the tray fits the shelf and the case fits the pallet. Designing it badly is easy and expensive. A case sized for the shelf but not for the pallet produces part layers, unstable stacks and damage. A case sized for the pallet but not for the shelf has to be unpacked individually, which defeats the point. An opening that needs a knife is a safety issue and slows replenishment. And a pack that ignores the retailer's published requirements on dimensions, counts or label placement generates handling charges, rejections and a conversation with a buyer that nobody wants to have. The other half of retail packaging is everything around the product: display units for promotions, presentation formats for gifting and premium lines, point of sale material, and the carrier bags and consumables a store gets through. Multipacks and promotional formats frequently need assembling as well as supplying, which is contract packing - WSUK provides co-packing and repacking and kitting and assembly for exactly that. For brands selling through retail and online at the same time, the retail specification and the ecommerce packaging specification are different documents and should be written as such, and retail fulfilment covers the operational side.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about retail packaging at WSUK, answered plainly.

What is shelf ready packaging?

A case designed to go from pallet to shelf as a single unit. A perforated or scored opening removes the front and top in one movement, leaving a tray that presents the product facing the shopper - so replenishment is quick and no product has to be handled individually.

Can you build cases to a specific retailer's requirements?

Yes, and it is the starting point rather than an afterthought. Retailers publish requirements for case dimensions, counts, labelling and pallet configuration, and a case that ignores them creates charges and rejections at the depot.

Why do our pallets arrive with damaged cases?

Frequently because the case size does not divide into the pallet footprint, so the build has part layers and overhang. Sizing the case to the pallet as well as to the shelf fixes it.

Do you supply display units and promotional packaging?

Yes - counter and floor display formats, multipack and promotional outers. If the promotion needs assembling as well, WSUK can do that too - see co-packing and repacking.

Do you supply carrier bags and in-store consumables?

Yes, for the store side as well as the supply side.

We sell in retail and online. Do we need different packaging?

Yes - they are different problems. Retail packaging is about the depot, the pallet and the shelf; ecommerce packaging is about carrier size bands, network handling and the customer opening it. Write them as two specifications.

Can retail packaging be sustainable?

Yes, and retailers increasingly require it. Single-material corrugated cases, right-sized to the shelf and the pallet, are usually both the compliant answer and the lower-material one - see sustainable packaging.

Can you print retail packaging?

Yes, and on shelf ready formats the print is doing real work because the opened tray faces the shopper. See custom printed packaging.

Can WSUK handle retail distribution as well?

Yes - retail fulfilment, B2B fulfilment and transport and distribution cover getting the cases to the depot.
