Rework is corrective work on stock that exists but cannot currently be sold. The usual causes are mundane and expensive: a pallet rejected at a retailer’s gate because the SSCC label was the wrong format, a batch that arrived with the wrong barcode, imported goods held because they lack the required language or origin labelling, date codes printed incorrectly, outer cartons crushed in transit while the product inside is perfectly fine. The instinct in each case is to treat the stock as lost, and it is almost always the wrong instinct — relabelling from around seventy-five pence a unit against the full landed cost of the goods is rarely a close call. What stops businesses doing it is not economics but capacity: nobody has the people to go through a pallet unit by unit, so the stock sits until it is written off. That is a scheduling problem being priced as a loss.
