The Humber is a specialist driver market. Alongside the usual container and trunk work, the estuary’s energy and chemical activity creates sustained demand for ADR-qualified drivers, and that is where the real scarcity sits. General Class 1 is recruitable with normal notice; ADR and tanker-experienced drivers are not, and operators who treat them as interchangeable with general haulage struggle all year.

ADR is the real constraint
Immingham is the largest UK port by tonnage, driven heavily by bulk and energy traffic, and the estuary carries substantial chemical and industrial activity alongside it.
The consequence is a persistent, structural shortage of ADR-qualified and tanker-experienced drivers in this region. These are not drivers you recruit at a week’s notice, and they are not substitutable with general Class 1 however good the candidate.
Two things follow. Treat your ADR drivers as a retention problem and resource them accordingly. And if your requirement is growing, consider sponsoring ADR training for reliable drivers you already have — in this market that pays back faster than almost anywhere else in the country.
The rest of the work, and who it suits
Container work from Hull and Immingham is Class 1 skeletal running governed by terminal booking windows, with waiting built into the day.
Bulk and tipper work serves the industrial and energy sectors, often with early starts and largely local running.
Ro-ro trailer movements follow vessel schedules, which means shift timings driven by sailings rather than by distance.
Trunking west along the M180 towards the M18 moves port freight inland, mostly overnight.
Class 2 regional distribution serves Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Cleethorpes and the surrounding towns, home every night.
The bridge, and the geography of your driver pool
Your drivers live across a dispersed set of towns — Barton, Barrow, Brigg, Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Cleethorpes — and the Humber Bridge is tolled.
If your operating centre is in Hull and you want to recruit from North Lincolnshire, the toll is a daily cost your drivers carry twice. Covering or contributing to it opens up the southern bank; not covering it quietly halves your catchment.
Be specific about the operating centre in the brief. Immingham is around twenty miles from Barton, Grimsby further, and Hull is across the estuary. Describing any of them loosely as "Humber" produces drivers who accept and then recalculate.

A year-round market, which changes your planning
Because the port economy runs on bulk, energy and industrial cargo rather than retail, demand here does not collapse in January. That is unusual and genuinely useful.
It means you can offer drivers steady year-round hours, which is a strong retention argument against regions that boom and bust. It also means you are not competing with every other operator in the same six-week window.
Peaks here follow vessel schedules and industrial cycles, so your planning should track those rather than the retail calendar.

What we verify
Physical licence, Driver CPC and digital tachograph card for every driver, licences checked for endorsements, and category confirmed against the vehicle. ADR verified as current where the work requires it — and in this region it frequently does.
For port and terminal work we check relevant experience and build induction and any security clearance into the start date rather than promising an immediate start.
