Driver supply in Northern Ireland has one defining constraint: the pool is the pool. You cannot bring drivers across at short notice the way a GB operator can draw from a neighbouring county, so planning matters more and churn costs more. The compensating advantage is that most work here is home every night, which is a genuine recruiting asset that GB long-haul operators cannot match.

Use the home-every-night advantage deliberately
Northern Ireland is compact. Most regional distribution from Mallusk, the Harbour Estate and Lisburn gets a driver home daily, and multi-night tramping is far less common than in Great Britain.
That is a significant recruiting advantage and it is routinely under-sold in job adverts. Drivers with families weigh it heavily, and it allows you to compete for experienced people without matching GB long-haul earnings.
Say it explicitly in the brief. "Home every night" does more work in this market than another fifty pence an hour.
The ferry sets your schedule, and your risk
Sailings at Belfast Harbour and Larne dictate the timing of a large share of local haulage. Shifts are built around getting to or from a vessel, which produces early starts and evening finishes that have nothing to do with distance.
It also concentrates risk. A delayed or cancelled sailing disrupts a whole day’s plan, and drivers absorb that as waiting. Operators who pay for port waiting and who replan quickly keep drivers; those who do not acquire a reputation fast in a market this small.
In a region where everyone knows everyone, reputation is a more material recruitment factor than it is in GB. That cuts both ways and it is worth being deliberate about.

Cross-channel work needs its own brief
Movements between Great Britain and Northern Ireland involve customs and sanitary documentation that domestic work does not. Drivers may be responsible for carrying and presenting paperwork correctly.
When you brief us, separate domestic from cross-channel requirements. We screen for drivers who have done it, and for domestic roles we do not filter people out unnecessarily on experience they do not need.
Where you are willing to train, say so — it materially widens the pool, and most reliable drivers pick the process up quickly.
What we verify and how we work
Physical licence, Driver CPC and digital tachograph card for every driver, licences checked for endorsements, and category confirmed against the vehicle. ADR verified where the agri-food or industrial work requires it.
For port work we factor site induction and any security clearance into the start date rather than promising an immediate start.
Because the regional pool is finite, we will tell you plainly what volume is achievable at what notice. To talk through an operation, get in touch.
