For an HGV driver, the Humber is one of the better regions in the country to be based. Immingham is the UK’s largest port by tonnage, Hull and Grimsby add further port traffic, and Scunthorpe brings heavy industrial freight. Barton upon Humber sits in the middle of that ring with the A15, A180 and M180 on the doorstep. Class 1 dominates container, bulk and trunk work.

The Humber is a genuine freight region
The Humber estuary handles an enormous volume of UK trade. Immingham is the largest UK port by tonnage, driven by bulk, energy and ro-ro traffic. Hull handles containers and ro-ro; Grimsby adds further port activity; and Scunthorpe brings heavy industrial freight of its own.
For drivers that means a dense concentration of Class 1 work in a relatively small geographic area, with a mix — container, bulk tipper, tanker, ro-ro trailer and conventional trunking — that is unusually varied.
Being honest about location: Immingham is around twenty miles from Barton upon Humber, Grimsby a little further, and Hull is across the Humber Bridge in the East Riding. None of them is in Barton, and job adverts in this area are often loose about it.
The work types, and who each suits
Container work. Class 1 skeletal running from Hull and Immingham, governed by terminal booking windows. Repetitive, with waiting built in.
Bulk and tipper. A large part of the Humber economy, serving the industrial and energy sectors. Often early starts, often local, and physically straightforward but requiring care around loading and discharge.
Tanker and ADR work. The energy and chemical activity around the estuary generates genuine demand. ADR is worth real money here — more so than in most regions.
Trunking. West along the M180 towards the M18 and the national network, moving port freight inland. Mostly overnight Class 1.
Regional distribution. Class 2 work serving Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Cleethorpes and the surrounding towns, home every night.
The bridge, and the arithmetic drivers skip
If you live in Barton and take work in Hull, you cross the tolled Humber Bridge twice a day. Over a month that is a meaningful deduction.
Some operators cover or contribute to it, and some do not. Ask directly before you accept. A Hull job paying slightly more than an Immingham one can easily be the worse deal once the crossing is paid for.
We will work that out with you properly rather than selling you an hourly rate that does not survive contact with your fuel and toll costs.

Licence, CPC and the qualifications that pay here
Class 1 needs C+E, Class 2 needs C, and both need a current Driver CPC and a working digital tachograph card — all checked physically on day one.
ADR is the standout extra in this region because of the energy and chemical activity around the estuary. If you hold it, say so immediately; if you are considering getting it, the Humber is one of the best places in the country for it to pay back.
Port and terminal work usually requires a site induction, sometimes a security check, before a first shift. Allow for that rather than expecting to start the next morning.
Pay, shifts and a different seasonal shape
Rates follow category, shift and specialism. Container and bulk work generally above general haulage; ADR above both; nights above days.
The useful quirk of this region is that the port economy runs on bulk, energy and industrial cargo rather than on retail. That means the work does not dry up in January the way it does in retail-led distribution regions, which is a genuine advantage if you want steady year-round hours.
Before accepting, check where you start, whether waiting at the terminal is paid, and whether the bridge is covered. Those three answers tell you most of what you need to know.
