The quick answer

Greater Manchester is one of the strongest HGV markets in the north, and the work is varied in a way that smaller towns cannot match. Trunking runs out of Trafford Park and the Salford corridor onto the M62, M6 and M61. Container traffic moves along the Ship Canal and from the intermodal terminals. Air cargo at Manchester Airport generates time-critical linehaul. And urban multi-drop across the conurbation keeps a large Class 2 fleet busy.

Tell us your licence category, CPC and digi card status, and whether you want trunking, container, airport or multi-drop work. We will match you to live roles across the M60 ring.

  • Class 1 & Class 2 work
  • Weekly PAYE pay
  • Regular, planned shifts

The work, and where it runs from

Trunking. Overnight runs out of Trafford Park and the Salford and Eccles corridor to distribution centres across the country. Class 1, trailer swaps, minimal handball. The M62 east towards Leeds and Hull, the M6 south towards the Midlands and north towards Scotland, and the M61 towards Preston are the main arteries.

Container and intermodal work. Manchester has rail freight terminals and the Ship Canal, and container traffic moves between them and the ports. Class 1 skeletal work shaped by terminal booking windows.

Air cargo linehaul. Manchester Airport, at Wythenshawe in the south of the city near the M56, has a World Freight Terminal generating time-critical movements. Night weighted, like most air freight work.

Urban multi-drop and retail distribution. Class 2 rigid work serving a conurbation of nearly three million people. Busy, physical, home every night, and shaped by congestion and access rather than by distance.

The motorway ring, and why your start point matters

The M60 rings the conurbation, and almost all the logistics sites sit on or just inside it. That makes Greater Manchester unusually easy to drive in and out of — and it makes the ring itself the chokepoint when something goes wrong.

The M62 runs east to Yorkshire and west towards Liverpool, the M6 handles north and south, the M61 goes north-west towards Preston, and the M56 serves the airport and the route towards North Wales and Chester.

Your actual start point matters more than it does in smaller markets. Trafford Park, Eccles, Carrington, Heywood and the airport are all "Manchester" in a job advert and are spread across a wide area. Check the postcode before you accept a shift, especially for an early start.

Clean Air Zone and vehicle compliance

Greater Manchester has had an on-again, off-again relationship with a charging Clean Air Zone, and the position has changed more than once. What that means for you as a driver is simple: it affects the vehicle and therefore the operator, not your licence.

Practically, reputable operators run compliant fleets and will answer the question directly. If an operator is vague about vehicle standards, that usually tells you something about how the rest of the business is run.

Ask the question at interview. You do not need to track the policy detail — you need to know that the people putting you in the cab have.

Class 1 & Class 2

Licence, CPC and what gets checked

Class 1 needs C+E, Class 2 needs C, and both need a current Driver CPC and a working digital tachograph card. All three get checked physically on your first shift.

Licences are checked for endorsements. Because there are so many operators across Greater Manchester, we can usually place drivers that a single-operator agency would turn away — tell us what is on yours and we will target accordingly.

Container and terminal work often requires a site induction before your first shift, so build that into your expectations rather than assuming you will start the next morning.

Pay, patterns and the size advantage

Rates follow category and shift: Class 1 above Class 2, nights above days, tramping with a night-out allowance. Container work often carries a premium for the booking-window pressure.

The real advantage of a market this size is choice. If an operator messes you around, there are dozens of others inside the M60. That leverage is worth using — drivers here do not have to stay on work they dislike.

Peak builds from autumn to Christmas across retail distribution. Air cargo follows flight schedules instead, so it offers steadier work through the quieter months.

Frequently asked questions

Is there plenty of Class 1 work in Manchester?
Yes. Trunking out of Trafford Park and the Salford corridor onto the M62, M6 and M61 is the largest category, alongside container and intermodal traffic and air cargo linehaul from the airport.
Does the Clean Air Zone affect me as a driver?
It affects the vehicle and the operator rather than your licence. Reputable operators run compliant fleets and will answer the question directly, which is worth asking at interview.
Can I get Class 2 work that is home every night?
Yes. Urban multi-drop and retail distribution across the conurbation is largely Class 2 and home daily.
Is tramping available from Manchester?
Yes, with a night-out allowance on top of the hourly rate. The M6 and M62 connections make it a practical base for it.
How far apart are the main sites?
Further than job adverts suggest. Trafford Park, Eccles, Carrington, Heywood and the airport are all advertised as Manchester but are spread across the conurbation, so check the postcode before accepting an early start.
