Northampton is one of the best places in the UK to hold an HGV licence, because the concentration of distribution centres means there is almost always someone recruiting. Work splits between trunking out of the big sheds at Brackmills and Swan Valley, store and retail distribution across the Midlands, and container and rail-linked traffic from the terminals in the surrounding area. Class 1 dominates trunking; Class 2 covers most store delivery and multi-drop.

Why there is so much driving work here
Northampton sits in the middle of the Midlands Golden Triangle, the area roughly bounded by the M1, M6 and M42 where a very large share of UK national distribution capacity is concentrated. The reason is simple geography: from here a tractor unit can reach most of the population of Great Britain within a single driver shift.
That concentration is why the town has Brackmills, Swan Valley and Moulton Park, and why the surrounding ring — Daventry, Crick, Rugby, Lutterworth, Wellingborough, Kettering and Corby — is similarly dense.
For a driver, the practical effect is leverage. If one operator messes you around, there are a dozen others within half an hour. Operators here know that, which is why rates and shift premiums in this area are genuinely competitive.
The kinds of HGV work on offer
Trunking. Running loaded trailers between distribution centres, usually overnight, usually trailer swaps rather than drops. Class 1, minimal handball, predictable mileage. The most common Class 1 work in Northampton and the reason many drivers move here.
Store and retail distribution. Delivering into shops across the Midlands and beyond. A mix of Class 1 and Class 2, with roll cages and tail-lift work, and more physical than trunking. Usually home every night.
Multi-drop and trade delivery. Class 2 rigid work serving trade counters, sites and smaller customers around Northamptonshire. Busier, more varied, more customer contact.
Container and rail-linked traffic. Drawn from the intermodal terminals in the wider area — principally DIRFT at Crick, roughly fifteen miles out near M1 junction 18, rather than in Northampton itself. Class 1, skeletal trailers, and shaped by terminal booking windows.
Tramping. Widely available from this area because of its central position. Night-out allowance on top of the hourly rate, and genuinely the best-paid option if the lifestyle suits you.
The road network, and what it means for your shift
M1 junction 15 serves Brackmills via the A45; junction 15A serves Swan Valley; junction 16 covers the north-west approach. The A43 runs north-east towards Kettering and Corby, and the A14 links east towards Felixstowe and west towards the M6 — which is why so much container traffic passes through.
Northbound trunking runs tend to use the M1 towards the M18 and the North East, or the M6 for the North West and Scotland. Southbound covers London and the South East. East-west work leans on the A14.
The one honest warning: the M1 between junctions 15 and 19 is heavily used and incidents there reshape your whole day. Operators who plan realistically around that keep drivers; operators who schedule as though the motorway is always clear do not.

Licence, CPC and what gets checked
Class 1 needs a valid C+E entitlement; Class 2 needs category C. Both need a current Driver CPC and a working digital tachograph card. Bring all three physically to your first shift.
Your licence will be checked for endorsements. Some operators in this area are stricter than others, and because there are so many of them we can usually place drivers that a single-operator agency would turn away. Tell us what is on your licence up front and we will work with it.
If you are newly qualified, say so. Northampton is actually a reasonable place to get your first year in, because the volume of trunking work means some operators will take newly passed Class 1 drivers that elsewhere would not.
Pay, peak and getting the shifts you want
Rates follow category and shift. Class 1 above Class 2, nights above days, tramping with a night-out allowance on top. In the pre-Christmas peak from about September, rates and available hours both rise sharply because every distribution centre in the Triangle is competing for the same drivers at once.
If you want to maximise earnings, autumn is the window. If you want a specific shift pattern, autumn is also when you have the most bargaining power.
Apply once and tell us the pattern you actually want. We would rather place you on work you will stay on than fill a shift this week and lose you next.
