How to Package Products for UK Delivery

6 min read 31 Oct 2026 WSUK Team
The quick answer

Packing for UK delivery means deciding first whether the goods travel as parcels or on pallets, because the two have opposite failure modes. Parcels fail through movement and need restraint; pallets fail through stack compression and need board grade and a square build. Get that decision right and the rest follows.

One question decides most of the specification

Before thinking about materials, establish how the goods leave: through a parcel network, or on a pallet. Almost every subsequent decision follows from that, and they pull in different directions.

Two modes, two specifications.

Parcel despatch within the UK

  1. Decide the carrier band the product group should ship in.
  2. Choose a format that sits inside it - book wrap, mailer, postal box or carton.
  3. Specify restraint so the product cannot move during sortation.
  4. Specify the closure: tape construction, pattern and base method.
  5. Decide re-closability if your returns rate justifies it.

See postal and parcel packaging and ecommerce packaging.

Pallet despatch within the UK

  1. Size the case so it divides into the pallet footprint without overhang.
  2. Specify board for the full stack load and the dwell time, not the case contents.
  3. Use corner boards and edge protection where the stack is tall or the journey long.
  4. Build square, wrap with enough tension to unitise without crushing the top layer.
  5. Label so a goods-in team can receive without opening anything.

See industrial packaging and transport and distribution.

The UK-specific considerations

  • Next-day is the default expectation for much of the country, which puts pressure on pack speed rather than on protection.
  • Letterbox depth is unusually valuable in the UK because it avoids both a price band and a failed delivery.
  • Weather. Parcels sit on doorsteps and in porches; a moisture-resistant outer or liner is worth considering for goods that would be ruined by rain.
  • Mixed urban and rural delivery means pack robustness has to cover both a city multi-drop and a long rural round.

Multi-drop and consolidated delivery

Goods that travel on a multi-drop round are handled more than a single-destination pallet - loaded, part-unloaded, re-stacked as the vehicle empties.

That shifts the specification back towards handling robustness: stronger closure, corner protection, and labelling that survives being shuffled. See pallet storage and transport and distribution.

When goods travel both ways

Many businesses despatch the same product as trade pallets and as individual parcels. Trying to use one pack for both is a common and expensive compromise.

The practical answer is a trade case and a separate parcel format, sharing as much protection specification as possible but sized and specified for their own journeys. See packaging for fulfilment.

A quick self-check

  1. Do you know which mode each product group leaves by?
  2. Is the pack specified for that mode's failure mode?
  3. Have the parcel formats been measured against carrier bands?
  4. Is the board on pallet cases specified for the stack rather than the contents?
  5. Is there a written standard so every pack is built the same way?

The short version

  • Decide first whether goods travel as parcels or on pallets.
  • Parcels fail through movement; pallets fail through compression.
  • Letterbox depth is unusually valuable in the UK.
  • Multi-drop rounds handle goods more than single-destination pallets.
  • The same product usually needs two different packs if you do both.

Frequently asked questions

Is UK delivery packaging different from international?

The journey is shorter and the handling regimes more consistent, so dwell, humidity and multi-mode handling matter less - see export packing for international.

Should the same product be packed differently for parcel and pallet?

Usually yes. The failure modes are opposite - movement versus compression - and one pack rarely serves both economically.

Does weather matter for UK parcel delivery?

For goods that would be ruined by rain, yes. Parcels are frequently left in porches or behind bins; a moisture-resistant liner is cheap insurance.

What is the most common UK packaging mistake?

Not measuring parcel formats against carrier size bands. It costs on every order and nothing visibly goes wrong.

Can WSUK deliver as well as supply the packaging?

Yes - transport and distribution, parcel services and pallet delivery cover the delivery side.
