Packaging for Wholesale Fulfilment

6 min read 30 Oct 2026 WSUK Team
The quick answer

Wholesale packaging is about case quantity, pallet efficiency and handling cost per unit. Cases should hold a quantity the buyer can actually use, divide cleanly into the pallet footprint, carry board specified for the full stack, and be labelled so a goods-in team can receive them without opening anything.

Wholesale economics run on units per handling

In wholesale, the cost that matters is how much handling each unit attracts on its way through. Every time a case is opened, split, re-counted or re-stacked, cost is added without value.

Packaging decides most of that. Case quantity, case size and pallet configuration together determine how many handling events a unit experiences between your warehouse and the buyer's shelf.

Case quantity: the decision with the longest shadow

Case quantity is usually inherited. It is worth revisiting, because it drives cost at both ends.

  • Too large: the buyer over-orders, holds stock they do not need, or splits cases - which creates handling and loose stock.
  • Too small: more cases per pallet, more labels, more handling and higher material cost per unit.
  • Awkward numbers: complicate counting and replenishment at the buyer's end.
  • Non-dividing: quantities that do not produce a clean pallet layer waste deck space on every consignment.

Ask a few customers what quantity suits their replenishment cycle. The answer is frequently different from what you have been shipping for years.

Pallet efficiency is money

A pallet that is 85% utilised rather than 100% is paying 15% more carriage per unit, on every consignment, permanently.

Corner protection where neededSurvives handling and transit

What drives pallet efficiency.

See industrial packaging and pallet storage.

Board grade for the whole stack

In wholesale the stack is usually taller and dwells longer than in any other channel. Board chosen for the contents of a single case will crush at the bottom of a full pallet, particularly if the goods sit in storage for weeks in a humid building.

Specify for the load above and the dwell time, and consider corner boards, which are frequently cheaper than a grade up in board. See packaging materials.

Labelling for goods-in

A wholesale buyer's goods-in team is measured on throughput. Make your consignments easy to receive and you become an easy supplier to deal with.

  1. Same label position on every case, on at least two faces.
  2. Product code, description and case quantity readable without lifting.
  3. Barcodes reachable by a handheld scanner on a stacked pallet.
  4. Pallet-level label summarising contents where consignments are mixed.

Mixed pallets and split cases

Wholesale increasingly involves mixed pallets and smaller drops rather than full pallets of single lines. That changes the packaging requirement: cases need to be stackable in mixed configurations and individually identifiable.

It also increases the value of a case quantity that matches real order patterns, because splitting cases at the pick face is where handling cost accumulates. See wholesale fulfilment and packaging for fulfilment.

Reviewing it

  1. Check pallet utilisation on your three highest-volume lines.
  2. Confirm case quantities against what customers actually order.
  3. Verify board grade against real stack heights and dwell.
  4. Audit labelling from a goods-in perspective - try receiving your own pallet.
  5. Sample a full build before changing anything in production.

The short version

  • Wholesale economics run on handling events per unit.
  • Case quantity drives cost at both ends of the chain.
  • Pallet utilisation below 100% is paid for on every consignment.
  • Stacks are taller and dwell longer than in any other channel.
  • Try receiving your own pallet to audit the labelling.

Frequently asked questions

How do we decide case quantity?

From what customers actually order and what divides cleanly into a pallet layer. Those two constraints usually produce the answer between them.

Why do our bottom cases crush?

Board specified for the case contents rather than the stack above. Check stack height and dwell time, and consider corner boards before upgrading the board.

How do we improve pallet utilisation?

Size the case footprint to divide into the pallet, and the case height to divide into your stack limit. Small dimension changes often produce large utilisation gains.

Does wholesale packaging need to be branded?

Identification matters far more than presentation. Clear, consistent, scannable labelling is worth more than print.

Can WSUK store and despatch wholesale stock?

Yes - wholesale fulfilment, pallet storage and transport and distribution cover storage through to delivery.
