This guide covers the full packaging decision for a Shopify store: choosing formats by product group, sizing them to carrier bands, specifying protection against the real failure mode, adding branding that does not slow the bench, planning for returns, and sourcing it all without filling your unit with stock.

Step one: group your products
You do not need a pack decision per SKU. You need one per group, and the grouping that matters is physical rather than commercial.
- Flat and rigid-ish - prints, books, boards, some apparel.
- Soft and compressible - knitwear, textiles, bags.
- Small and rigid - jars, tins, small hardware.
- Fragile - glass, ceramics, anything with a weak axis.
- Large or awkward - anything that does not fit the above.
Most Shopify catalogues reduce to three or four of these.
Step two: choose a format per group
| Group | Format | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flat and rigid-ish | Book wrap or wrap-around | Grips the product, often letterbox depth |
| Soft and compressible | Paper or polythene mailer | Light, no wasted volume |
| Small and rigid | Postal box | Structure without excess size |
| Fragile | Carton with fitted insert | Restraint plus cushioning |
| Large or awkward | Made-to-size carton | Removes the gap and the volumetric cost |

See ecommerce packaging.
Step three: size to the carrier band
Once you know the format, the dimensions decide the cost. Check each format as shipped against your carriers' published thresholds, and specifically against the letterbox depth for the flat group.
This is the step most stores skip, and it is where the recurring money is. See postal and parcel packaging.
Step four: specify protection against the real failure
Look at what has come back damaged. Scuffing and bending mean movement; clean breaks mean impact; crushing means stack load.
Movement is the usual answer in a parcel network, and the fix is restraint rather than more fill - loose protection settles over a journey and the void returns. See protective packaging.
Step five: add the brand layer
Decide how much brand work the pack should do, and put it where it lands best.
- Printed tape - brands every box size with one printed line. Best value if you hold more than two sizes.
- Printed inner or tissue - lands at the moment of opening, which is where it counts.
- Printed mailer or carton - highest impact, highest commitment; sensible on your highest-volume format only.
- Card insert - carries instructions, care notes and offers; cheap and useful.
Step six: plan the return journey
If your category has returns, specify re-closability: a tear strip with a second adhesive lip, and instructions printed inside the lid rather than on a slip.
It costs little and it decides whether returned stock is resellable - see returns management.
Step seven: source it without filling your unit
Printed and bespoke lines come in run quantities. Rather than ordering short at a worse price, buy the economic run and have it held on call-off.
See packaging stockholding, and Shopify fulfilment if you would rather the packing happened where the packaging already is.

Frequently asked questions
How many pack formats does a Shopify store need?
Usually three or four, matched to physical product groups rather than to catalogue categories.
What is the cheapest effective branding?
Printed tape if you hold several box sizes, because one printed line brands all of them.
Should we use letterbox formats?
For flat goods, yes where achievable - it avoids a price band and a failed delivery at the same time.
How do we stop packaging taking over our unit?
Buy at the economic run and have it held on call-off - see packaging stockholding.
Can WSUK supply packaging and fulfil Shopify orders?
Yes - Shopify fulfilment with the packaging specified, supplied and held alongside.
