Greater Manchester is one of the largest warehouse employment markets outside the Midlands, and almost none of the work is in Manchester city centre. The biggest single concentration is Trafford Park, which sits in the Borough of Trafford rather than in Manchester. Add the Salford and Eccles corridor along the Ship Canal, the freight area at Manchester Airport in Wythenshawe, and the estates ringing the M60, and you have a market with constant recruitment and unusually good public transport.

Where the work is, and which borough it is actually in
Trafford Park is the heart of it. It was the first planned industrial estate in the world and it remains one of the densest logistics areas in the north, with distribution, manufacturing and trade units across a very large site. It sits in the Borough of Trafford, not in the City of Manchester, though it is a short hop from the city centre and is universally advertised as Manchester.
Salford, Eccles and Irlam run west along the Manchester Ship Canal, in the City of Salford. This corridor carries substantial distribution capacity and is served by the M60 and M62.
Manchester Airport and its World Freight Terminal sit at Wythenshawe, which is within the City of Manchester, in the south of the conurbation near the M56. Air cargo work here has its own character and its own access requirements.
Stretford, Carrington and the estates around the M60 fill in the rest, with Heywood and Rochdale to the north forming a related but distinct cluster.
Public transport that genuinely works
This is the real advantage of looking for warehouse work in Greater Manchester rather than in a rural distribution park. Metrolink serves Trafford Park directly, Eccles, and the airport. Rail covers Irlam, Eccles and the wider conurbation, and bus coverage across Greater Manchester is dense by UK standards.
For day and back shifts, a car is genuinely optional here — which is unusual and worth knowing if you have been ruling out warehouse work for that reason.
Nights remain harder. Metrolink and most rail services do not run through the small hours, so a 10pm–6am shift usually means a car, a lift share or night buses. Tell us how you travel and we will only put you forward for shifts you can realistically reach at both ends.
The roles, and where each tends to be
- Warehouse operative, picker and packer — everywhere, and the standard entry point. Trained on site.
- Counterbalance and reach truck drivers — heavy demand across Trafford Park and the Salford corridor. Tickets checked properly.
- VNA drivers — fewer roles, consistently hard to fill, best paid of the standard MHE work.
- Air cargo handler — around the airport freight area. Flight-driven, night weighted, and some roles need airside clearance.
- Goods-in and despatch — WMS work, more office-adjacent.
- Loader and container devanner — around the Ship Canal and container handling operations.
The sheer number of employers means that if one site does not suit you, another will. That is the practical benefit of a market this size.

Shifts, pay and competition between sites
Days, back shifts, permanent nights and four-on-four-off are all widely available. Weekend work is common and usually carries a premium.
Pay follows role and shift. MHE above picking, nights above days, VNA at the top. Because so many sites compete within the M60 ring, rates are responsive — a site struggling to fill will move, and workers here generally know what the going rate is.
Peak builds from autumn through Christmas, driven by retail and e-commerce distribution. Air cargo at the airport has its own rhythm tied to flight schedules rather than to the retail calendar.
Airport cargo work: a quick note on access
If a role is inside the airport security boundary it will need a pass, involving a background check across a defined period of your history. That takes weeks rather than days.
Plenty of freight work around the airport is landside and needs no pass. If you want to start earning quickly, say so and we will target landside and off-airport roles first.
