Northampton is one of the densest warehouse employment markets in the country, and the work is concentrated in three estates: Brackmills to the south-east, Swan Valley to the south-west, and Moulton Park to the north. All three sit within the town. Beyond them, the wider Midlands Golden Triangle — Daventry, Crick, DIRFT, Rugby and Lutterworth — adds thousands more roles within commuting distance, though those are separate places rather than part of Northampton.

The three estates that carry Northampton warehouse work
Brackmills, south-east of the town centre, is the largest and best known. It is a mature industrial and distribution estate with a high concentration of national distribution centres, and it is the first place most people find warehouse work in Northampton. Access is via the A45 and M1 junction 15.
Swan Valley sits to the south-west, close to M1 junction 15A. It is newer than Brackmills, with larger modern units, and tends to carry bigger single-occupier distribution operations.
Moulton Park, to the north, has a different character — a broader mix of light industrial, manufacturing and smaller-unit distribution. It is the most practical option if you live north of the town and want to avoid crossing it twice a day.
Those three are genuinely in Northampton. The large rail-linked sites people often mention in the same breath — DIRFT at Crick, and the terminals around Daventry — are not. They are roughly fifteen miles out and are a separate commute.
What the Golden Triangle means if you live in Northampton
Northampton sits inside the area the logistics industry calls the Golden Triangle, broadly bounded by the M1, M6 and M42, where a very large share of UK national distribution capacity is concentrated.
For you as a jobseeker, that has one practical meaning: your options are not limited to the town. Within a reasonable drive you have Daventry, Crick and DIRFT, Rugby, Lutterworth, Wellingborough, Kettering and Corby. If Northampton is quiet in a given week, somewhere in that ring is usually recruiting.
It also means competition for workers is real, which is good for you. Sites in this area compete on shift premiums and on how quickly they can get you started, because the alternative employer is fifteen minutes up the M1.
What it does not mean is that those places are Northampton. If a job advert lists a Northampton location but the site is at DIRFT, check the actual postcode before you accept.
The roles, and which ones actually need experience
- Warehouse operative / picker packer — the volume role across all three estates. No experience needed; you will be trained on the site’s own systems.
- Counterbalance FLT driver — loading, unloading and yard work. Ticket required and genuinely checked.
- Reach truck driver — high-level put-away and picking. Consistently in shorter supply than counterbalance across Northampton, and paid accordingly.
- VNA driver — very narrow aisle, the best paid of the standard MHE roles and the hardest to fill.
- Goods-in / despatch clerk — paperwork, bookings and WMS work.
- Team leader — usually recruited from people who have already worked the floor on the site.
If you hold a reach or VNA ticket and you are currently doing general picking, tell us. In this market that ticket is worth money and it is routinely under-used.

Shifts, pay and the Northampton peak
Shift patterns here include straight days, 2pm–10pm back shifts, permanent nights and four-on-four-off at the larger distribution centres. Weekend work is widely available and usually carries a premium.
Pay tracks role and shift rather than estate. MHE above picking, nights above days, VNA at the top of the standard range. Because so many employers sit within a few miles of each other, rates here are genuinely competitive — and they move noticeably in the pre-Christmas peak.
That peak is the defining feature of the Northampton calendar. From roughly September the national distribution centres start building for Christmas, and by October there is far more work than there are people. If you want maximum hours, that is the window. If you want to be choosy about shift pattern, that is also the window.
Getting to the estates
Brackmills and Swan Valley are both built around motorway access rather than around bus routes, though both are served from the town. Moulton Park is the easiest of the three to reach from the north of Northampton.
By road: M1 junction 15 and the A45 for Brackmills, junction 15A for Swan Valley, and the A43 and A5076 for Moulton Park. The A14 links east towards Kettering and Corby if you are commuting in from that direction.
For night shifts, check bus timetables before you accept. Services into the estates thin out considerably outside standard hours, and this is the most common reason a new starter misses their second shift.
