Warehouse Jobs in Rochester

The quick answer

Warehouse work advertised as Rochester is really Medway work. Rochester sits within the Medway unitary authority alongside Strood, Chatham and Gillingham, and the jobs are spread across all four rather than concentrated in Rochester itself. The biggest single cluster is Medway City Estate, which is actually at Frindsbury on the Strood side of the river. Add Chatham Docks, Gillingham Business Park, Lordswood and the estates around Rochester Airport and you have a steady, mostly local market.

Where the Medway warehouse work actually is

Medway City Estate is the main one. It is a large industrial estate on the Frindsbury peninsula, on the Strood side of the River Medway rather than in Rochester proper, and it carries a dense mix of distribution, trade and light industrial units. If you are searching for warehouse jobs in Rochester, this is statistically where you will end up.

Chatham adds Chatham Docks and the surrounding industrial areas. Gillingham has Gillingham Business Park and a run of smaller units. Lordswood, south of Chatham, holds a further industrial estate that is easy to overlook and often recruiting.

Around Rochester Airport and Laker Road there is a cluster of engineering and light industrial units — different work from big-shed distribution, and worth knowing about if you prefer smaller sites.

Further east, Kingsnorth and the Isle of Grain, including Thamesport, are a genuinely different proposition. They are roughly fifteen miles out on a peninsula with limited public transport, so treat them as a separate commute rather than as Rochester.

The river is the thing people underestimate

Rochester and Strood face each other across the Medway, and the crossings between them are a real constraint on your working day. Medway City Estate looks close to Rochester on a map, and at peak times it is not.

If you live on the Rochester or Chatham side and take a job on Medway City Estate, check your actual journey at your actual start time before you commit. A shift that starts at 6am is usually fine; one that starts at 8am may not be.

The same applies in reverse. We will ask which side of the river you are on, because in Medway it genuinely changes which roles are sensible for you.

The roles on offer

  • Warehouse operative / picker packer — the volume role across Medway City Estate and the Gillingham units. No experience needed.
  • Counterbalance FLT driver — widely needed across the estates, ticket checked.
  • Reach truck driver — fewer roles than counterbalance but consistently harder to fill, and paid accordingly.
  • Goods-in and despatch — booking in deliveries, paperwork, WMS entry.
  • Loader and general yard — more common around the dock areas.

Medway has a higher proportion of small and medium units than a Golden Triangle town does, which changes the work. You are more likely to be doing a bit of everything on a small team than one repeated task on a large one. Many people prefer it; it is worth knowing which you are signing up for.

Shifts, pay and seasonality

Days dominate on the smaller units. The larger distribution operations run back shifts and nights, and weekend work appears mostly around peak. Four-on-four-off exists here but is less common than in the Midlands.

Pay follows role and shift rather than estate. MHE above picking, nights above days. Medway rates are generally a little below London, which is relevant because a share of the local workforce commutes into London instead — so local employers are competing with that, and the better ones know it.

Peak runs from autumn into December, driven by retail distribution and parcel volume. That is when weekend and night premiums are most available.

Getting there

By road, M2 junctions 1 to 4 and the A2 serve the Medway towns, with the M20 running parallel to the south towards Maidstone and the Channel ports.

By rail, Strood, Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham all have stations on the North Kent line, with high-speed services to London from Strood and Rochester. That is unusually good for warehouse work — most of the Medway estates are genuinely reachable without a car for day shifts.

Nights are the exception, and the Isle of Grain is the bigger exception. If a role is at Kingsnorth or Thamesport and you do not drive, tell us before we put you forward.

Frequently asked questions

Is Medway City Estate in Rochester?
Not quite. It is on the Frindsbury peninsula on the Strood side of the River Medway. It is the largest industrial estate in the area and most Rochester warehouse searches lead there, but it is across the river from Rochester itself.
Can I get warehouse work in Medway without a car?
For day shifts, often yes. Strood, Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham all have rail stations and the estates are served by local buses. Night shifts and sites out towards the Isle of Grain are much harder without transport.
Do I need experience?
Not for picking, packing and general operative roles. FLT work requires a valid ticket, which will be checked.
Is there much night work in Medway?
Less than in the big Midlands distribution hubs. The larger operations run nights and back shifts; many of the smaller units are days only.
What about Thamesport and the Isle of Grain?
There is work out there, but it is roughly fifteen miles east of Rochester on a peninsula with limited public transport. Treat it as a separate commute and only take it on if you drive.
