Warehouse work in Belfast is concentrated in two places: the Harbour Estate around the Port of Belfast, and Mallusk, a large industrial and distribution area in Newtownabbey a few miles north of the city. Add Lisburn to the south-west and the estates around the city’s western approaches, and you have the core of Northern Ireland’s distribution capacity — because almost everything that enters the region by sea comes through Belfast.

Why Belfast concentrates Northern Ireland’s warehousing
Northern Ireland is an island region, and the overwhelming majority of goods arriving from Great Britain come in by sea. Belfast Harbour is the principal gateway, with Larne further up the Antrim coast handling additional ferry traffic.
That single fact shapes the whole market. Goods land at the port, are broken down and distributed from nearby warehousing, and move out across the region. So the distribution capacity clusters close to the harbour and on the main routes leading away from it.
The practical consequence for a jobseeker is that Belfast holds a disproportionate share of the region’s warehouse employment relative to its population. If you live in or around the city, you have more options than the size of Northern Ireland might suggest.
The main areas, and which county they are in
Belfast Harbour Estate and Sydenham sit on the eastern side of the city beside the port and George Best Belfast City Airport. Port-linked warehousing, freight forwarding and distribution concentrate here.
Mallusk is the other major cluster — a large industrial and distribution area in Newtownabbey, in County Antrim, around six miles north of the city on the M2 corridor. It is not in Belfast, though it is routinely advertised as such, and it carries a great deal of the region’s big-shed capacity.
Lisburn, to the south-west on the M1, is a city in its own right and a significant employment centre. Carrickfergus and Antrim add further options up the Antrim coast and towards Belfast International Airport at Aldergrove, which is around eighteen miles north-west of Belfast — considerably further out than the City Airport.
Holywood and the North Down area sit in County Down, east of the city.
Customs and freight paperwork, in plain terms
Goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland involve customs and sanitary checks that do not apply to movements within Great Britain. You do not need to understand the policy — but it does affect the work.
Practically, it means Northern Ireland has more freight forwarding, documentation and customs-adjacent roles than a comparable region in GB, and that goods-in and despatch work here often carries more paperwork responsibility.
If you have any administrative or documentation background, say so. In this market it is more valuable than it would be elsewhere, and it opens up better-paid office-adjacent roles rather than pure floor work.

The roles, shifts and pay
- Warehouse operative, picker and packer — the volume role across Mallusk and the Harbour Estate. Trained on site.
- Counterbalance FLT driver — widely needed, ticket checked.
- Reach truck driver — tighter supply than counterbalance, better paid.
- Goods-in, despatch and documentation — more significant here than in most regions because of cross-channel paperwork.
- Chilled and food distribution — Northern Ireland has a strong agri-food sector, so temperature-controlled work is a real part of the market.
Days, back shifts and nights are all available, with four-on-four-off at the larger sites. Peak builds from autumn to Christmas, with the agri-food sector adding its own seasonal pattern.
Getting there
By road, the M2 runs north from Belfast past Mallusk towards Antrim and Larne, the M1 runs south-west towards Lisburn and Dungannon, the A8 heads to Larne, and the A1 runs south towards Newry.
Belfast has reasonable bus coverage into the Harbour Estate and towards Mallusk during standard hours, and Translink rail serves Lisburn, Carrickfergus and Antrim. For day shifts, working without a car is realistic.
Night shifts at Mallusk and the Harbour Estate are considerably harder without transport, as services reduce substantially. Tell us how you travel and we will match you accordingly.
