Bury itself is not a major national distribution hub, and it is worth saying so plainly. What Bury is, is a well-connected town inside the north Greater Manchester employment corridor, with industrial estates of its own at Pilsworth and elsewhere, and with much larger logistics capacity a short drive away at Heywood. For most people searching for warehouse jobs in Bury, the realistic answer is a mix of local units and a ten to fifteen minute commute to the bigger sites nearby.

Being honest about where the work is
Some job sites will tell you Bury is a logistics powerhouse. It is not, and you will waste time if you search on that basis. Bury is a town of around 80,000 people in the north of Greater Manchester, with a normal mix of industrial estates, trade units and smaller distribution operations.
What makes it a good base for warehouse work is what is around it. Pilsworth, on the Bury and Heywood side, carries a cluster of industrial and distribution units. Heywood, just east in the Rochdale borough, has substantially more logistics capacity including a large distribution park. Radcliffe, Whitefield, Prestwich and Middleton add further units, and Bolton and Rochdale are both within a reasonable commute.
And the whole of Greater Manchester opens up from here. Trafford Park and the Salford corridor are a longer run but entirely commutable, particularly for a back shift when the M60 is clear.
What the local roles actually are
- Warehouse operative, picker and packer — the volume role, trained on site, no experience needed.
- Counterbalance FLT driver — widely needed across the local estates. Ticket required and checked.
- Reach truck driver — fewer roles locally than counterbalance, and correspondingly better paid when they come up.
- Goods-in and despatch — paperwork and system work on the smaller units.
- Loader and general warehouse — particularly on the trade and builders’ merchant side.
Because Bury’s units skew smaller than a big-shed distribution park, the work tends to be more varied. You are more likely to be doing several things on a small team than one repeated task on a large one. Plenty of people prefer that; it is worth knowing which you are applying for.
Getting there, including to Heywood
The M66 runs north from the M60 through Bury and is the main road artery, connecting south to the M60 ring and, via it, to the M62 east towards Heywood, Rochdale and Yorkshire. The A56 is the older north–south route through the town.
For public transport, Bury is the northern terminus of the Metrolink Bury line, which is genuinely useful — it gives you direct tram access to Whitefield, Prestwich and central Manchester, and onward connections across the network.
The honest limitation is that Metrolink does not reach the Heywood and Pilsworth estates. Those are bus or car journeys, and bus services into industrial estates thin out for early and late shifts. If a role is at Heywood Distribution Park and you do not drive, check the bus times for your actual shift before accepting.

Shifts, pay and realistic expectations
Days dominate on the smaller Bury units. The larger distribution operations at Heywood and across the wider corridor run back shifts, nights and four-on-four-off patterns, usually with premiums.
Pay follows role and shift rather than town. Because the whole north Manchester corridor competes for the same workers, local rates track the wider Greater Manchester market reasonably closely.
Peak builds from autumn to Christmas on the retail and e-commerce side. That is when the larger sites take on the most people and when shift premiums are most available.
