Leeds is the commercial centre of a very large distribution region, and most of the warehouse work sits on the edges of the city and along the M62 rather than in Leeds itself. The south and east fringes around Stourton and the A63, the M62 corridor through Wakefield, Normanton and Castleford, and the estates towards Bradford and Birstall carry the bulk of it. Public transport is better than most logistics regions manage, which widens your options considerably.

Where the warehouse work sits around Leeds
Not in the city centre. The distribution capacity is on the ring and along the motorways.
South and east Leeds — the Stourton area and the corridor along the A63 and M1 approach — carries a substantial cluster of distribution and trade units close to the city.
The M62 corridor is the bigger story. Wakefield, Normanton, Castleford and Pontefract, around M62 junctions 30 to 32, hold large-scale distribution capacity serving the whole north of England. These are separate towns from Leeds, within a straightforward commute, and they are where a lot of the volume roles actually are.
West towards Bradford and around Birstall and Batley there is a further mix of distribution, textiles-legacy industrial and retail units.
Leeds Bradford Airport, at Yeadon between the two cities, adds a smaller amount of air freight and airport-related work.
The roles, and where to find each
- Warehouse operative, picker and packer — the volume role, heavily concentrated along the M62 corridor. Trained on site.
- Counterbalance FLT driver — needed almost everywhere, ticket checked.
- Reach truck driver — tighter supply than counterbalance across West Yorkshire, better paid.
- VNA driver — fewest roles, hardest to fill, best paid of the standard MHE work.
- Goods-in and despatch — WMS and paperwork roles.
- Returns and e-commerce processing — a notable West Yorkshire specialism, with heavy seasonal peaks in January as well as before Christmas.
That January returns peak is worth knowing about. Unlike most warehouse markets, this region offers a genuine second wave of work right after Christmas rather than a quiet month.
Shifts, pay and two peaks a year
Days, back shifts, permanent nights and four-on-four-off are all widely available, particularly at the larger M62 sites. Weekend work is common with premiums.
Pay tracks role and shift rather than town. Reach and VNA above picking, nights above days. Rates across West Yorkshire are competitive because the M62 sites compete directly with each other for the same workers.
The pre-Christmas peak builds from September as everywhere. The distinctive feature here is the January returns peak, when e-commerce returns processing creates substantial additional work just as other regions go quiet. If you want year-round hours, this is a good region for it.

Getting there, which is genuinely easier here
By road, the M1 comes up from the south and terminates at Leeds, the M621 runs into the city, the M62 crosses east–west between Hull and Manchester, and the A1(M) runs north–south to the east. The A63 and A64 handle local routes.
Public transport is a real advantage in this region. Leeds has one of the busiest rail stations outside London, with frequent services to Wakefield, Castleford, Bradford and Pontefract, and the bus network across West Yorkshire is dense.
That means many M62-corridor sites are genuinely reachable without a car for day and back shifts — which is unusual for big-shed distribution and worth knowing if you have been ruling it out. Nights remain harder, as always.
